Does Bad Horror Equal Entertaining?
I was laying in bed one night thinking about what movie I would like to watch. My thoughts stalked around the idea of rewatching Halloween Resurrection, and then swam about the prospect of Great White. Ultimately I watched neither, but if I had to choose I would have chosen HR. Why is that? Why would, arguably, the worst film in the Halloween series beat a film that some would say is better made. Let’s dive in, finish our brief break of film overviews, and find out.
The first thought that comes to mind is brand recognition. Halloween Resurrection has one of the most iconic slasher villains, nay, one of the most iconic villains in general. Michael Myers. A being unique solely to that franchise. And yes, while he is among the stabbing pot of other slasher icons, and icon wannabes, he stands out as one of the first. His whole deal is that he just is, he’s simply pure evil. There isn’t much in the way of reasons as to why he kills. The beast is a total enigma, and his kills can be brutal (which is what most people want to see anyway). Great White on the other hand has sharks. That’s it. If we disregard the logic behind these shark attack movies, they’re still kind of boring villains. At least in this film. Not only does this film have boring villains, but also boring characters.
