Godzilla: A Most Versatile Character.

From Disaster to Hero.

The longevity of a character can sometimes come down to how versatile they are. If a character was only useful or relevant for a certain scenario, then it won’t take long for their act to get stale.

Fortunately, for a character like Godzilla, that isn’t a problem. Let’s briefly discuss how and why Godzilla works as such a flexible character.

Godzilla has represented a plethora of different themes and ideas throughout his 70-year-long run. The one most people will refer to is his representation of nuclear war in 1954’s ‘Gojira’.

In that film, he became a message of what could happen should mankind use nuclear weapons in warfare. This also translates how we might create our own undoing.

During the 80s and 90s, you can say that Godzilla represented the dangers of unchecked genetic tampering as a chunk of monsters from that era were created from Godzilla’s cells.

There was also an instance where he represented the souls of Japanese soldiers who died in World War II during 2001’s ‘Godzilla, Mothra, and
